Foodie Fun Beyond 'Chicago Gourmet'
No tickets to "Chicago Gourmet?" Moonshine's annual "Rib-a-Que" is a great foodie alternative this weekend. (Photo: Moonshine)
Chicago Gourmet's completely sold out (unless you still plan to do the Dine Around deal), but no worries because there's so many more fabulous, foodie-type events happening this weekend:
Balsan: Just in time for fall, family-style suppers arrive at Balsan on Sunday. Grab your friends—or actual family members—and relax with a multi-course meal for $29 per person at the swanky Gold Coast Elysian hotel. The pre-fixe menu changes weekly, but look for hearty, fall-focused feastables like wood-fire roasted chicken, pasta carbonara and home-style peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. 5-10pm Sundays.
Chicago Food & Film Festival: This is the first film fest of its kind that pairs up movies with munchies. For example, watch the 15-minute "The Best of Hamburger America," then chow down on burgers from DMK Burger Bar. Or watch six minutes of "The Perfect Oyster" to get you ready for Fanny Bay oysters shucked by Shaw's Crab House. Event happens Friday and Saturday at the MCA Warehouse (1747 West Hubbard St.). Get the tickets here.
Custom House: It's the end of tomato season and Slow Food Chicago celebrates with a benefit for the organization. A number of restaurants will participate by whipping up signature versions of the BLT, including Osteria Via Stato and Green Grocer. 1-3:30pm Sunday. $25.

Fred's at Barneys New York: Your wallet with love you if you take advantage of cheap new bar menu Fred's After Five, offering $6 items or three items for $15. Choose from a meatball slider, trio of drumettes, lobster avocado lettuce wraps, salmon rillettes and arancini stuffed with braised pork. Menu is offered after 5pm nightly.
Los Moles: You cannot go wrong with this Lakeview Mexican brunch offering with choices like blue-corn pancakes, huevos rancheros and huevos con chorizo made with naturally raised eggs. And what's even better is the booze: $10 bottomless mimosas. 10am-3pm Saturdays, Sundays.
Mercadito: How many tacos can you stuff down your gullet?! You can take a challenge during the late-night Taquiza Time menu, where you can get all-you-can-eat tacos for $23 after 10pm Sunday-Thursday and after 11pm Friday-Saturday.
Moonshine: And head to the third-annual Rib-A-Que Smoke-Out to sample a number of ribs from the likes of SmallBar, Honky Tonk BBQ, Smoke Daddy, FIZZ, Socca and Sheffield's. The chefs will go head to head to see who takes home the highly coveted Gilded Grill. You'll get to sample all their dishes for $25 (or $35 at door). Noon-6pm Saturday.
